Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment
that involves placing sperm directly into the uterus to increase the chances of
fertilization. It is commonly used to assist couples with certain fertility
issues, such as low sperm count, sperm motility issues, or cervical factor
infertility.
The process of IUI involves the following steps:
Ovulation induction: If needed, the woman may undergo
ovulation induction using fertility medications. These medications help
stimulate the development and release of one or more mature eggs.
Monitoring: Throughout the menstrual cycle, the woman's
hormone levels and follicle development are monitored through blood tests and
ultrasound examinations. This helps determine the optimal timing for the IUI
procedure.
Sperm preparation: On the day of the IUI, the male partner
provides a semen sample at the fertility clinic. The sample is then washed and
processed to separate the healthy and motile sperm from the seminal fluid.
Insemination: The prepared sperm is loaded into a thin,
flexible catheter. The woman lies on an examination table, and a speculum is
inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. The catheter is carefully
threaded through the cervix into the uterus, and the sperm is injected into the
uterine cavity.
Post-procedure: After the insemination, the woman may rest
for a short period before being allowed to resume normal activities. Some women
may experience mild cramping or spotting after the procedure.
Following the IUI, the woman may be prescribed progesterone
supplements to support the uterine lining and potential pregnancy. A pregnancy
test is typically performed about two weeks after the procedure to determine if
conception has occurred.

vary depending on various factors, including the underlying fertility issues,
